Mindfulness involves observing the thoughts, emotions and sensations that arise without judgement; being fully in the present moment, accepting what is; not resisting it, not trying to make it be any other way. This can lead to greater self-awareness, increased emotional regulation and a much more joyful existence.
But what does observing without judgement actually mean?
Non-judgement means observing thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a non-critical way; without evaluating them as good or bad, right or wrong but, instead, accepting what is, without trying to fix or change it. It’s a state of openness and curiosity.
Practising non-judgement, during the day, helps people to be more understanding, more accepting of differences, and more compassionate towards themselves and others. This reduces stress and anxiety and allows for more harmonious relationships.
How to practise non-judgement?
Practising non-judgement can be challenging in the beginning, as we tend to form opinions and judgements about pretty much everything - people, situations, and even ourselves, and we do this rapidly. However, with practice, it is possible to cultivate an attitude of non-judgement.
If you are looking to get started, we have set out an ‘all-you-need-to-know’ list for you below.
But first, it’s important to understand that in order to be able to practise non-judgement, we need to make contact with the silence that lies at the core of who we are. We do this through having a regular meditation practice. Once we have that established, we can start to implement this into our life, as we move through our day.
Self- Observation
- Observe any thoughts, emotions and sensations that arise within you, from that non-judgemental space.
- Notice when you are making assumptions or labelling people or situations.
- Notice how you speak to yourself. Is it critical? If so, begin to shift it to more positive self-talk.
Beginners Mind
- Adapt a beginners mind. Stay curious. Approach people and situations with an open mind and without any preconceived notions.
Cultivate Empathy
- Practice seeing things from other people’s points of view.
Self-Correction
- Take inspired action. Accept, adapt, accomodate and act.
- Stay humble. Always ready to learn something new about yourself and others.
- And, remember that you are cultivating a new way of being so go easy on yourself.
