What does it mean to abandon yourself?
Abandoning yourself means neglecting your own needs, feelings and wellbeing in favour of those of others or external circumstances. It can show up in many different ways, such as neglecting self-care, ignoring physical or emotional pain, putting up with mistreatment from others or compromising on values or boundaries.
What happens when you consistently do this?
This pattern can lead to low self-esteem, a lack of self-worth, anxiety, depression, feeling disconnected from your authentic self and a lack of fulfilment in life and this can result in a person engaging in more self-destructive behaviours in order to deal with these issues.
But how do we break the self-abandonment cycle?
Breaking this pattern involves learning to identify and prioritise your own needs and desires, setting healthy boundaries, cultivating a sense of self-worth and self-compassion and taking time to rest and recharge.

Notice Your Emotions
Become present. Identify and label the emotions you are experiencing, including any triggers that give rise to them. This gives you greater insight into yourself and your needs.
Cultivate Self-Compassion
Be gentle and kind towards yourself. Acknowledge that you are human and doing the best that you can.
Prioritise Self-Care
Make time to rest, rejuvenate and engage in activities that fill you up, such as exercise, healthy eating, spending time in nature, connecting with others, being creative and getting enough sleep. Meditation, breathwork and journaling can also be very helpful.
Seek Support
Reach out to family, friends, a support group or mental health professional if needs be. Shifting this pattern can take time so know that it’s okay to seek help and support along the way.
A pattern means that we have spent some time doing things that way, so we need to practise doing things in a different way but with willingness, patience and self-compassion, you can create a more loving and supportive relationship with yourself and this will positively impact all areas of your life.
