What is yoga?
Yoga is a holistic system of health and well-being, originating in India, that seeks to unite the body, mind, and spirit. The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit root "yuj," which means to join or to yoke together, and refers to the practice of uniting the individual self with universal consciousness.
Yoga encompasses a wide range of practices, including physical postures (asanas), breathwork (pranayama), meditation, and a whole lot more. There is mantra, kriya, wisdom, devotion; the list goes on and on.
The physical postures of yoga are designed to improve flexibility, strength, balance, and coordination, while also promoting relaxation and reducing stress. They help to open up our energetic channels (nadis) and distribute energy, cultivated through more intense yogic practices, around the body.
Yoga is not a religion. It is the spiritual heritage of humanity. It is about us coming more into alignment within ourselves, with each other, our environment and the greater whole. It’s a practice that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds, and it can be adapted to suit individual needs and abilities. Wherever you are, whatever your situation in life, yoga meets you there and walks you home.
If your curiosity has been piqued and you are wondering how yoga can benefit your life, read on. Yoga has so many benefits that we couldn’t list them all. But we have listed a few for you below.
