Namaste is a Sanskrit word that is commonly used as a greeting in countries such as India and Nepal. It’s derived from the words ‘namah’, meaning ‘bow’, and ‘te’, meaning ‘to you’ and so it is often translated as ‘I bow to you’ or ‘I honour the divine in you’.
It’s a way of showing respect and acknowledgement of the other person's presence, their soul, the divine essence that resides within each of us. It is, also, a way of recognizing the interconnectedness and oneness of all beings. So, ultimately, it is an acknowledgment of the divine in oneself and in others.
The gesture that often accompanies the word ‘namaste’ involves bringing both palms together in front of the heart, fingers pointing upwards, and bowing the head slightly. This hand gesture is known as ‘namaskar mudra’ and is considered a sign of gratitude, respect and humility. It is used in everyday interactions, to greet friends, family, and even strangers. It is, also, commonly used in the yoga world. It’s a way of deeply acknowledging the other person's presence and expressing goodwill towards them.
To practise Namaskar mudra:
Bring your hands together in front of the heart centre. Gently press the palms together and extend your fingers up towards the ceiling. You can also bow your head slightly as a sign of respect or gratitude.
And then if you are greeting someone simply add the word ‘Namaste’. It is pronounced ‘nuhm-us-tay’ with the emphasis on the second syllable.
Namaskar mudra can, also, be added to your meditation practice, to deepen your experience, or combined with yoga poses such as mountain pose or warrior 1, inviting in more balance, creating inner harmony and enhancing mental focus as you unite both sides of the brain.
