If you are feeling a bit sluggish and want to draw more juice out of life, you can start your day with an energising breath practice to focus your mind, enliven your system and infuse your day with positivity.
There are many breathing exercises that will energise your system. Here, we will look at one of those practices, Kapal Bhati, also known as Breath of Fire.
What is Kapal Bhati?
Kapal Bhati, which translates as ‘skull shining’ is a fiery breath practice that awakens and cleanses the system, dissolves mental exhaustion and heavy emotions, and enlivens the energy.
The practice involves quick forceful exhalations and passive inhalations.
What can Breath of Fire do for you?
- Detoxifies the system
- Clears the mind
- Improves gut health
- Promotes optimal brain health
- Dissolves mucus in the lungs
- Improves lung elasticity
- Increases circulation
- Dissolves mental exhaustion
- Clears heavy emotions
- Increases aliveness
When to do it?
This is a great practice to do in the morning or at any stage throughout your day if you want to clear out stress and become more present and energised.
How to do it?
To practise, sit in a comfortable position with a tall spine. Take a deep breath in, and then forcefully exhale through your nose while pulling your belly button towards your spine. Allow the inhalation to happen passively. Repeat this for several rounds, gradually increasing the speed of your exhalations.
Remember to start slowly with any new breathing practice and always listen to your body. If you feel uncomfortable or dizzy at any point, take a break and return to your normal breath.
How often should you practise it?
It’s okay to start with 30 seconds and gradually work up to 2 minutes. Practising twice a day will bring increased results.
