Hanuman, also known as Anjaneya, the son of Anjana, is the Monkey God. He is one of the central characters in the epic Ramayana.
He is a devotee of Rama and he is known as the son of the wind god, Vayu, as Vayu played an important role in Hanuman’s birth, delivering sacred pudding to Anjana, which he consumed, leading to the birth of Hanuman.
Hanuman is an incarnation of Shiva. He represents physical power. He is the strongest of the strong. He is the highest symbol of vitality.
Yet, Hanuman is also completely devotional, humble, and surrendered to his master, Rama, surrendered to the Guru within and without. In that, he teaches us not to limit intimacy to a specific role.
When you combine strength, assertive excellence and heroic initiative in a perfectly balanced way with loving devotion, you get Hanuman.
Fear, blame, and jealousy do not rise up in him. He symbolises self-regulation and humble service. He represents innocence, health, vitality, and the perfected heart and mind. He has an immensely playful and childlike energy along with a one-pointed focus.
Hanuman’s Childhood
One day in his childhood, Hanuman was hungry. He saw the rising sun, mistook it for a ripe fruit and leapt to eat it. He was struck down, but later restored to health. He, however, forgot his supernatural powers, until he was reminded of them through his devotional service in adulthood.
Hanuman in the Ramayana
In the Ramayana, Hanuman helps Rama to rescue his kidnapped wife, Sita.
To thank Hanuman, Rama gave him a gift but Hanuman threw it away, saying that he did not need a gift to remember Rama, as he would always be in his heart. When asked for proof of this, Hanuman tore open his chest, revealing the images of Sita and Rama inside his heart. He asked only for a place at Rama’s feet, to worship him.
The Monkey Mind
The lower mind is a monkey mind, always restless, unsettled, jumping about the place, but when you begin to stand for something greater, the mind rises up and becomes like Hanuman, the greatest devotee - strong, devotional and with true staying power.
To go beyond the lower mind, we need to let go of our addiction to suffering and learn to love, beyond liking and disliking. We need to realise, like Hanuman does, that the only thing ever happening is love.
The only thing ever happening is love.
It's time to awaken the spirit of Hanuman within you, activating that healing, harmonious energy in the world. This Hanuman Jayanti (Hanuman’s birthday), rise up and commit to making your life stand for something. Be the one who lifts others up. Be the one who sees the way!
Invoke the presence of Hanuman, cultivating devotion, surrender and unshakable trust as you practice with Corrin in her Hanuman Set, only on Sattva Connect.
