What is self-care?
Self-care is any activity a person engages in to take care of their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It involves being mindful of one’s needs and making time to prioritise them. This can include physical exercise, healthy eating, getting enough sleep, clearing the mind and centring the energy through meditation and breathwork, taking time to relax and be with loved ones and engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfilment.
Why do we need to self-care?
Self-care is essential for reducing stress and anxiety, maintaining good physical, mental and emotional health, and feeling good in body and mind so that we can live our best life.
How do we start to care for ourselves? Below, we have set out some ways that you can practise self-care:
Sufficient Sleep
In order to function well, to maintain good physical and mental health, we need adequate sleep.
Stay Hydrated
Drinking water is a really important aspect of self-care, as water is essential for a wide range of bodily functions and it helps to keep the body hydrated and healthy
Eat Healthy
A balanced diet that includes whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins help you to feel healthy and energised.
Move Your Body
Exercise not only promotes physical health but it also has a positive effect on mental health, reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, while improving physical fitness; supporting you to feel good in both body and mind.
Meditate
A meditation practice allows us to come to centre and connect with a deeper part of ourselves so that we aren’t feeling tossed around by life and we are more capable of being with all that life presents.
Breathe In Life
Breathwork supports us in connecting with the body, reducing stress, releasing emotions and building energy so that we feel more alive and can more fully enjoy this life.
Be Mindful
We are living in a fast-paced world, with our attention moving in an outward direction most of the time so mindfulness practices can be really supportive in helping us to notice what is going on inside of us; expanding our self-awareness so that we can better know our needs and desires, and deal with situations that arise in a much more beautiful way.
Be Kind to Yourself
Practise treating yourself with kindness, understanding and compassion, acknowledging that you are human and that it’s ok to make mistakes.
Set Boundaries
Setting boundaries protects your time, energy, and emotional well-being. Without boundaries, we risk overextending ourselves, neglecting our needs and desires and experiencing burnout or resentment.
Be In Nature
Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, increase energy levels and improve mood.
Connect with Others
Humans are social beings and so connecting with others is vitally important for our wellbeing. Relationships offer a sense of belonging and support as we move through life, reducing stress, increasing happiness and improving mental health, allowing us to live a more fulfilled life.
